A scene with water in it is always appealing. It’s hard to walk past a river, lake, or pond without looking for a photo opportunity. Maybe somewhere in our brains we still recall slithering out of the ocean to look for a drier home. Maybe it’s just been a hot summer and we’d like to jump in and cool off. Sometimes the view of the water alone is enough, the way the light reflects off of the ripples or how the sky and clouds affect the color. Other times water is a beautiful backdrop to motor boats, sail boats, kids playing, people relaxing on the beach, or a myriad of other scenes.
We went to Devil’s Lake State Park with friends on Monday. This place is a real gem but I suggest you avoid it on summer weekends unless you like crowds. The weather was great and a hike up the Potholes Trail was rewarded with beautiful views of the lake, outcrops of Baraboo Quartzite, and heavily wooded hills. Most of the afternoon, however, was spent relaxing in the shade and looking out at the lake. It was a beautiful late summer afternoon and the sun reflecting off the splashing water added highlights to the views.
