The holidays are over and a big cold snap is finally letting up. Other than taking photos of family and friends at social gatherings, I haven’t done much with my photography in the past few weeks. Just before the holidays, however, I was quite busy finishing my latest book, 3 Lakes, 4 Seasons: Another year in paradise. This is a book that shows the beauty of a small Northern Wisconsin town and the surrounding lakes throughout the year.
The nice thing about putting together a book like this is that it gives me a reason to review photos that I haven’t looked at in a while. In this case, the images were from June 2009 through August 2014. Looking over many hundreds of images I was reminded of how fascinated that I am with loons. These birds are beautiful and they can be elusive as they dive under water just before you press the shutter. Most of all, their calls are magical.
When I decided to post some of my photos of loons, it just didn’t seem right to leave out their distinctive voices, so I found some audio clips of loon calls from the The Voice of the Loon. I learned that there are 4 vocalizations: hoot, tremolo, wail, and yodel. So, have fun listening to some loon calls while looking at my photos.
You can also learn more about their calls on The Voice of the Loon page on the Loon Preservation Committee website.
