I enjoy winter, I really do. But by March I’m ready for spring. After all, that’s when the calendar says it’s supposed to arrive. Unfortunately, March in Wisconsin is a crazy month. It can be 75 degrees and sunny one day, and below freezing and snowing the next. So, when do flowers finally arrive? I thought I’d look back through some old photos to see what I might have photographed in March of previous years.
Sometimes our beautiful Magnolia tree will bloom in March. If a windy rain comes along, however, those blossoms are gone in a couple days. It’s not blooming this year, though there are some tightly clenched buds shivering on the branches.
My wife’s backyard flower garden often begins to smile in March. This year she’s only seen a few Snowdrops. Sadly, they quickly became rabbit food. I wish our backyard fox would return. But, at least here are a few from other Marches.
If we were lucky enough to be somewhere warm in March, we probably saw flowers that were also lucky enough to be somewhere warm in March. These flowers were in warm Arizona and Nevada in some past March. Mostly cactus, but that’s what you expect to see in a desert.
If there were no other flowers around, I could always depend on my wife’s Amaryllis to be in bloom.
Despite the lack of flowers, we should all look around and realize just how lucky we are. The lack of food, water, and shelter while suffering the horrors of war is worse than most people will ever know. So, here are some flowers for the brave people of Ukraine. If we do nothing else, we can at least make a donation and say a prayer for them.
